NEW IMPORT REGULATIONS FOR WOOD AND WOOD PACKAGING
India signed the INTERNATIONAL PLANT PROTECTION CONVENTION (IPPC) of the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organisation), a UN organisation that came together in Rome in 2002.
India herewith committed itself to taking appropriate measures for plant protection.
The new import regulations for wood and wood packaging will be effective starting on June 1, 2004 in line with the PLANT QUARANTINE (IMPORT INTO INDIA) ORDER 2003, but without exact instructions being available or having been published for its implementation.
The PLANT QUARANTINE (REGULATION OF IMPORT INTO INDIA) ORDER 2003 published first in November 2003 has in the meantime been subject to various amendments and ameliorations. The new version of the order of February 6, 2004, envisioned April 1, 2004 as the date for implementation, which was finally adjourned to November 01, 2004.
The Indian regulations for the import of wood and wood packaging essentially conform to the international IPPC-Standard. Solid timber as well as packaging made from solid timber has to be treated according to the internationally recognised measures and an official phytosanitary certificate has to be presented on import to India. …………………………… ISPM15 standards.
